Information from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts on the Premera Data Breach

On January 29, 2015, Premera Blue Cross (Premera) discovered that cyberattackers had gained unauthorized access to their systems.

The incident affected Premera Blue Cross, Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, and their affiliate brands Vivacity and Connexion Insurance Solutions, Inc.

Premera has stated that their investigation determined that attackers may have gained unauthorized access to applicants and members’ information, which could include member name, date of birth, email address, address, telephone number, Social Security number, member identification numbers, bank account information, and claims information, including clinical information.

The incident also affected members of other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans who sought treatment in Washington or Alaska. As a result, we have learned that some Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts members have been impacted by this breach.

Premera is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Experian to everyone who may have been affected. Premera plans to mail official notifications to all affected individuals.
